How Many Is Too Many?

Bendigo, August 25th, You would think the role of Bendigo council would involve the health and safety of the citizens in the area they represent. But they’ve passed over one of Bendigo’s most severe issues.

Unsafe intersections in Strathfieldsaye, Kennington and Flora Hill have been the locations for many accidents on Bendigo roads for a long time now. This year alone there have been half a dozen accidents, some involving serious harm and one involving death. They’re all in need of some serious improvement and yet it’s taken this long for the City of Greater Bendigo to finally step up and do something about it.

Why the wait? Where’s the urgency?

Is death on Bendigo roads not a great enough incentive for them to do their duty? The City of Greater Bendigo has demonstrated with intersection upgrades in Kangaroo Flat and Golden Gully that they have the well-being of Bendigo citizens in mind. But an upgrade on the Kennington roundabout, one of Bendigo’s busiest intersections, is too much too soon?

We should all be grateful that something is finally being done. However, it’s taken until August 14th of this year for the City of Greater Bendigo to consider work on the Kennington danger zone. Meanwhile several Strathfieldsaye intersections which have been deemed hazardous could be upgraded over the next ten years thanks to a petition from the schoolkids of Strathfieldsaye Primary.

One has to wonder how long this could have gone on for before the City of Greater Bendigo decided on its own how many accidents was too many.
