Undertale, the friendly RPG where nobody has to die. Well, that’s what the game’s tagline says… Unfortunately, that description doesn’t coincide with the infamous Genocide Route. And yes, it’s as bad as it sounds. The Genocide Route involves the player killing every single character they come across, every little creature… Including the ones that don’t fight back. Rest in piece, Papyrus.
I’ve killed Toriel, Papyrus, Undyne, and Mettaton. You most likely don’t know who they are, but to me, they feel like they’re my friends, despite being just fictional characters. I’ve grown pretty fond of them throughout the game’s regular route, aka the one where you actually decide to be a good person and let them live. But now, it’s nearly over. I’ve just gotta make my way through this last corridor, and…
Oh crap. Sans is probably going to have some choice words about me killing every single person he’s ever known. Especially considering that one of them was his brother. But, he can’t be that bad. He can’t be tougher than Undyne the Undying, right?
The sound of birds chirps plays, which is kind of ominous in this situation. Sans asks me if I think that anyone can be a good person, that even the worst person can change… But seeing how far I’ve come, there’s no way I can change my actions now. So when the striped shirt wearing child I’ve been controlling the entire game moves on their own…
…Well. That’s definitely not terrifying. But still, the child, the character who’s supposed to have no will of their own, once again steps closer to Sans, presumably trying to kill him without my input. With that, Sans apologizes to the now deceased Toriel, regretting that he has to break the promise he made to not hurt any humans.
Everything goes black, as a red heart flickers, taking us into the battle screen. Sans, now in black and white, goes on about how it’s a beautiful day outside, and that on days like these, ‘kids’ like me…
Without any warning, I’m stabbed by an onslaught of bones, causing me to die nearly instantly. I sit there stunned, as the red heart representing my soul breaks in half, taking me to the game over screen. Was I supposed to somehow react to that? I find myself back at my save point, a golden flickering light which envelops me in safety. I’m back at the beginning of the same damned hallway.
I walk onwards, and sure enough, Sans greets me once again, this time noting how I look ‘frustrated’ about something. Yeah, thanks a lot, Sans. Once again, we go into battle formation, but this time I’ve come prepared. He once again tries to stab me with a swarm of bones, but I manage to move my soul upwards to dodge it, and then pass through the tunnel of bones he had prepared for me. Terrifyingly, large skulls appear and fire laser beams at me, as I barely manage to maneuver the heart out of the way.
After barely surviving that whole ordeal, Sans shrugs and says…
Well, at least that should have been the worst of it… And now it’s my turn to attack, so I select the fight button and slash, expecting to kill him in one shot like mostly everyone else before him. He… dodges my attack?!
No other enemy in the entire game has ever dodged an attack before. It is at this moment when ‘MEGALOVANIA’ kicks in, an intense blood-pumping tune that really makes me feel like I’m having a bad time. My heart turns to blue, so instead of being able to fly around freely, I have to now abide by gravity and jump. And surprise, I have to dodge more bones, but I get hit by some of them and notice that it gives me a poison effect? Once his attack ends, my HP keeps draining, even on the menu. And I wasn’t too sure, but it seems like his attacks remove my invincibility frames, too? No wonder I died so quick before. Talk about unfair.
As it’s my turn again, I decide to select the check option. The narrator mockingly refers to him as ‘The easiest enemy’. Yeah, right. Sans throws another harsh attack at me, which causes me to panic and in an instant, my HP drops to zero and I die once again. You know what? I give up. Well played Sans, you have officially defeated me. Maybe I’ll reset the timeline and let you see your brother again. I’ll just watch a Youtube video instead…
Oh, and one more thing… If you think you stand a chance, then how about you give it a try yourself?
