A Viking horde descended on the Bendigo Market this weekend as Gullsborg Dark Ages Society of Bendigo put on a display of sword fighting and traditional crafting and cuisine.
The display amazed onlookers with fighters clad in chainmaille and armed with blunted steel swords and axe exchanging ringing blows and stylised deaths to the cheers and gasps of the crowd. In between bouts the fighters were set upon by children from the crowd armed with foam swords in what they referred to as “whack-a-viking” much to the delight of parents.
The reenacment group hailing from the Bendigo area is one of the largest in Victoria. Made up of people of all ages and from all walks of life the group is heavily focused on historical accuracy and sourcing all artickes with historical finds and archeological digs.
The group is currently undertaking a recruitment drive in an attempt to bolster their ranks and educate the public on the history and culture of the Viking age.
